An experienced Veterinary Assistant or Certified Veterinary Technician for the SPCA of Luzerne County is a compassionate, knowledgeable, and collaborative team member who plays a vital role in the shelter’s medical operations. This position supports the medical care of animals in both the feline/small animal areas and canine kennels, ensuring consistent, high-quality care across the facility.
This individual assists in all aspects of animal medical care and works closely and cooperatively with the veterinarians employed by the organization. They collaborate with all shelter departments to monitor and support the overall health and wellness of animals in the care of the SPCA of Luzerne County, helping to identify medical needs promptly and ensure appropriate treatment and follow-up.
Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures and perform surgical support duties as directed
- Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary clinic environment to prevent the spread of illness and disease
- Schedule surgeries and medical exams for adopted animals, foster animals, and staff-owned pets
- Properly clean, sanitize, and disinfect surgical instruments and equipment
- Provide post-surgical care and monitoring for animals recovering from procedures
- Maintain accurate controlled substance logs, ensuring all medications are properly documented, secured, and stored in compliance with regulations
- Clean and care for animals housed in the clinic area
- Receive, organize, and properly store all medical supplies and medications ordered by the veterinarian
- Prepare and provide documentation for staff veterinary service billing
- Maintain accurate daily records of spay/neuter procedures performed, including documentation needed for veterinarian payment
- Track and maintain records of all laboratory and fecal test results submitted by the veterinary team
- Accurately record all medical notes, surgeries, medications, and microchip implants in the shelter’s medical database
- Contact adopters to notify them when animals are ready for discharge and provide clear post-care instructions
